You get to see plenty of Turnips in the market as the cold sets in. Not only does turnip have medicinal properties, it also make a delicious curry. Turnip Chana Dal Curry is one of its best.
Clean Chana Dal and soak it in water for 3-4 hours before hand.
Peel, wash and cut turnips into small pieces.
Put the soaked Chana dal and turnip pieces in a cooker, add 2 cups water, salt and 1/4 tsp turmeric powder then close the cooker. After 1 whistle goes off lower the flamea nd cook dal for 3-4 minutes, then turn off gas.
Wash then cut tomatoes in big pieces. Wash green chillies and remove their stems. Peel, wash then chop ginger.
Roast Jeera, mustard, coriander, and cinnamon on a pan till they turn light brown. Put the tomato pieces, green chillies, ginger and roasted spices in a mixer to make a fine powder.
Heat oil in a frying pan(kadhai), put Heeng and Jeera in hot oil. After Jeera is roasted add turmeric powder, and the grounded spices. Fry all these spices till oil starts floating over them.
Open the cooker, dal is well cooked, put the fried spices in cooked dal and turnip. Add water according to how thick or thin you want the curry followed by salt.
Turnip Chana Dal Curry is ready, mix half of the chopped coriander to it, take it out in a bowl and garnish with butter and coriander. Serve hot Turnip Chana Dal Curry with chapati, naan or rice.
If you like onion, then finely chop 1-2 onions and 4-5 cloves of garlic. There is no need to put Heeng in hot oil, put in the chopped onions and garlic and fry till they become light pink. Now put in the other spices and fry them in the above given method, mix turnip with Chana dal.
